「いざよいの月（陰暦十六日の夜に出る月）」の略。特に、陰暦八月十六日の月。
満月に比べると翌晩十六日の月はやや遅く出るところから、「いざよい（とどこおる意の動詞「いざよう」の名詞形）」と呼んだもの。
秋の季語。
ちなみに、鎌倉時代の阿仏尼の日記「十六夜日記」は作者の旅立ちの日付が十月十六日だったところからの書名。
